Students are placed carefully into appropriate groups for Year 9 after transition tests in Middle Schools and liaison between the Heads of Science from Wolgarston, Brewood and Penkridge Middle Schools. All students then undertake an identical programme of study, completing Key Stage 3 in the first autumn half-term. This is followed by a formal test, the results of which are carefully analysed in order to identify students who may have been placed in the wrong Year 9 group.
After any necessary changes to groups, students study a GCSE module for the remainder of Year 9, taught by a team of subject specialists. In addition to GCSE content, students are given experience of the recently introduced Controlled Assessments for Science.
Year 9 ends with two formal GCSE module tests (not external exams), the results of which are carefully analysed in order to re-group students for the bulk of their GCSE or BTEC studies in Year 10 and Year 11.
